International Skilled Workers in the Rail Sector: Opportunities and Responsibility

International Skilled Workers in the Rail Sector: Opportunities and Responsibility

Since March 2025, Gabrielle Costigan has been the CEO of Global Rail Group. With roots in Australia, a background in civil engineering, and extensive international experience, she brings a fresh perspective to the ongoing skills shortage in the rail sector. In an interview with bahn manager, she shares insights into the growing demand for qualified professionals, her vision for sustainable integration, and the strategic direction of Global Rail Group.

Technically skilled, linguistically trained and motivated for the long term

At the heart of Global Rail Group’s recruitment model are so-called grey-collar professionals – individuals with technical backgrounds, a strong willingness to learn, and a commitment to building long-term careers in the DACH region. These professionals are primarily recruited for rail infrastructure roles, including track construction, operation of complex machinery, and maintenance and servicing. These are fields where practical expertise and reliability are key.

Global Rail Group trains these talents at its own training centres in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Turkey, with a strong focus on technical instruction, German language skills, and workplace culture in the destination country. This approach not only lays the foundation for a smooth job entry but also ensures efficient operations and high workplace safety in client companies.

Integration from day one

Global Rail Group actively involves its clients in the training process from the very beginning. This strengthens mutual understanding, builds trust, and increases motivation, on both sides.

Training typically lasts six to nine months, depending on language level and specialization. In addition to technical skills, soft skills such as punctuality, teamwork, and personal responsibility are systematically observed and fostered during the process. From candidate selection to visa support, Global Rail Group guides candidates through every step of the process.

More than just a recruitment agency

Global Rail Group sees itself not only as a service provider but also as a driving force for the rail industry. In addition to its recruitment services, the company runs the Global Rail group Academy in Leverkusen, publishes technical literature, and manages Trackopedia.com, one of the largest online encyclopedias dedicated to rail infrastructure and track technology.

Helping to shape political processes

As the newly appointed Vice President Europe at UITP, the International Association of Public Transport, Gabrielle Costigan aims to draw attention to systemic barriers. These include the slow recognition of foreign qualifications as well as digitalization gaps in administrative processes. In both areas, she sees not only a need for action but also great potential for cross-border collaboration and progress.

Conclusion

Global Rail Group pursues a long-term, quality-driven strategy: personalized training, early engagement with employers, and sustainable integration. In today’s tight labor market, this may not be the fastest route, but it offers a future-proof solution for companies, skilled workers, and the rail sector as a whole.
